External Practicum (Bachelor Degree)

External academic internships constitute a formative activity conducted by university students and supervised by the University, whose objective is to allow them to apply and complement the knowledge acquired in their academic training, and thus promote the acquisition of skills that prepare them for professional activities, facilitate their employability, and foster their entrepreneurial capacity.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCE External Practicum:

  • Pre-professional internships, with a final competency evaluation, allowing the student to incorporate professional values and skills aimed at:
    • Applying the knowledge acquired in previous modules in optical establishments, clinics and hospitals, health centers, and companies in the sector. Conducting clinical activities related to refraction, visual examination, contact lens fitting, visual training, and low vision.
    • Applying techniques for mounting visual corrections or compensations in glasses and possible contact lens adjustments. Engaging with product commercialization, procurement, storage, conservation, and information.
    • Knowing and applying techniques for manufacturing visual aids and optical and optometric instruments.
    • Understanding different action protocols depending on the patient.
    • Understanding the indications and procedure for performing and interpreting the necessary complementary tests in a vision consultation.
    • Conducting the patient care protocol in the optometric clinic.
    • Creating an appropriate clinical history based on the patient's profile. Correctly selecting and applying all the skills, abilities, and competencies acquired in optometry in each case. Promoting collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
    • Communicating and informing the patient about all the actions and tests to be performed, and clearly explaining the results and diagnosis.
  • As a general rule, the internship time does not count towards seniority and does not exempt from the probationary period.
  • Their realization does not entail, in any case, obligations typical of an employment relationship, and their content cannot lead to the replacement of labor provision typical of job positions.

  • Administrative and teaching support tasks cannot be considered external internships.

  • Students in external internships cannot maintain any contractual relationship with the collaborating entity where the internships are carried out or with UPC.
